"A Harvest of Death" by Timothy H. O'Sullivan
Timothy H. O'Sullivan was a photographer born in New York City in 1840. He learned in Matthew B. Brady's photography studio in New York and worked as part of his team during the civil war. Above is what is considered his most famous photograph, "A Harvest of Death", which show confederate soldiers dead on a battlefield in Gettysburg. I really like this photograph for two reasons. For one thing, it was taken in 1863. This photograph has incredible quality, detail, and style, especially when you realize when it was taken. Secondly, it has an incredible amount of emotion packed into one photograph. A photograph of dead hundreds of dead soldiers on a battlefield had to be extremely controversial at the time, and I admire O'Sullivan's guts for taking and publishing this piece.
